Fisantekraal Development Trust youth hike

Our club took a group of 20 young members of the community on a hike through
the Tygerberg Hills Nature Reserve. The weather was fantastic! They had the
opportunity to learn more about the importance of sufficient preparation for
a hike, nature and the history of Kanonkop. Some of them had never even seen
Table Mountain, so it was a real treat for them! We enjoyed a lovely picnic
under the trees before heading home again. We hope to become much more
involved with the youth of this growing community.

Kraaifontein Caravan Park Kids: Outing to Mini Cape

Every year, our club hosts a “Christmas in July” party for this group of
children who until recently stayed in a caravan park in the heart of
Kraaifontein. Unfortunately they had recently needed move off the land
because it is now being developed into town houses. With the help of one of our contacts, we were able to track a couple of the
kiddies down, to take them along with some others from the Tehillah
Community Centre, out for an afternoon to Mini-Cape on Langeberg road in
Durbanville.

The children spent a while playing games such as pass the parcel, where the
music ‘interestingly’ stopped just in time for each child would win
something. After that, each child was taken on a ride on a pony – none of
them have had the opportunity to do so before so it was very exciting! After a lunch of hot dogs and cooldrinks, each child received a present from
Mother Christmas before all too soon, it was time to pack up and leave. As
always, the children had a fantastic time!

One-to-One

The Durbanville Leo Club would like to say a huge thank you to all the
members of the public who gave up of their time to knit teddies and for the
donations of second hand soft toys, which we received through our appeal
earlier on in the year. The response was overwhelming! All the teddies and
soft toys were handed out at the One-to-One day recently held at Alexandra
Home. The physically and mentally disabled patients who attend the day,
where service clubs around the peninsula entertain them with an array of
simple games, are each given a prize for participating, whether they are
‘successful’ at the game or not. Everyone who participated in the Leo’s game
of hand soccer was each given a teddy bear as a prize. The patients were
very excited about this, as they love having something that they can
nurture.

Zone quiz

The Durbanville Leos were asked to host the Annual Zone Quiz, where 5 Lions
clubs get together to test their general knowledge. Using goodies left over
from the Soccer Skills Day as well as from other events as prizes, the Lions
complimented us on having the best prizes and the best organised quiz
they’ve been to! They definitely want us to do it again next year.

Conference fundraiser

We were asked by one of our Lions to help out with a training session which
he was giving to employees of his for which he needed assistance for
catering. Armed with our vouchers, we bought several platters from Shoprite
and Checkers in Durbanville along with tea, coffee and biscuits. We made a
profit of R1500 form the morning, which was out towards our Conference
Account, which will enable more of us to go to conference this year.
